Is Your Workspace Comfortable? If Not, WHY?

by Eric Goldstein on January 28, 2010

If you are going to spend time hangin’ out working in your office or at your desk… it should be a comfortable place to sit. You want to feel inspired with you’re sitting there and doing your thing.

I wanted to share with you the new space that I have for myself. I still have my home office, but I wanted to have some space outside of the house as well. So I shot a video sharing with you a few of the things I’ve set up for myself there that inspire me to create my magic:)

Check out the video:

Hey Eric,

I completely agree with what you are saying in your video. Having a creative and good-feeling workspace is essential to getting in the flow and keeping a positive mindframe – BTW love the million dollar check idea!

I just recorded a video for a new post on my blog about getting out of the office and working in different spaces to inspire yourself (I worked from my yard in sunny Florida yesterday).

In my home office I have a cork board above my desk with a short passage called “Master the Art of Living” which I love as well as some photos of things I am in the process of attracting into my life. I also have some wonderful drawing my 2.5 year old son made for me (always fills me with joy).

On the other wall next to me hangs my Ukulele so that I am reminded to take it down and strum or play it during the day.

Thanks for the tour of your office and sharing your thoughts!

Hey Phil!

You’ve got some cool stuff in the
office to keep yourself inspired.

I bet the pic from your son is one
of the best of them… I stopped by
your blog. You’ve got some great
value there buddy!

Thanks for coming by today:)

Peace Eric, i signed up for your 7 day course, I have to say, its pretty cool! very basic information, however, you have a very nice easy going & simple way about communicating… i like this. not a lot of fluff & basic keys to follow. awesome….

I also noticed Alicia on the ilearn site….! soo cool, we met @ the wealth builders event last year, a week right before I donated one of my kidneys to my fiance..! we had some great conversations & shes a really swell sis..!

I have lots of reading material to inspire me when I’m at my studio in bushwick brooklyn, alongside of some cool vinyl toys, & in my home workspace, on my 22 inch monitor, I have had a little fortune (yes, from a cookie) that says, “you’re at that critical point. Make that last push”.

I think that says it all, motivation to complete, complete, complete…… TO BE COMPLETE!

thanks again for the inspo.

Hey Aaron,

Thanks for your share. Yea, the info in my
course is a lot of simple and easy to do stuff.

Everyone is always looking for the HARD difficult
things… they think if they don’t understand it then
it must be good.

It’s the other way around. Coach Wooden always
taught his team the basics… over and over again!

I remember meeting you… we all had lunch at the
cafe. Great to hear all is well with you bro!

Eric,

Long time no see…

I used to have my computer in my den and it’s a bit dark in there so I decided to move my office to the worst and best place of the house… the family room/ kitchen (it’s all one big room).

I keep my dog around and anyone that walks by is able to see what I’m doing so it helps me be more authentic and really share the best I’ve got to offer.

Thanks for the video,

Hi Eric, Yep , I am still trying to create a comfortable atmosphere in my office. When I have the chance to mix it up a bit… It is all over. I am happiest when I can see the top of my desk at the end of the day… LOL Seems like a never ending battle. But when it is neat… I shine.

Hey Eric
Great post. Congrats on the new office space, it looks nice there with a great picture window. I love to be able to look outside and connect with the external world when I am brainstorming new ideas, so windows connecting me to the outdoors are extremely important to my ability to be productive. I love the check idea. That is fantastic, I do something similar – I post reminders of my “why” in different locations of my work space, my home, my car, everywhere I look on a regular basis. It helps keep me focused on what I’m doing and why I’m doing it.

Thanks for this great post my friend.

Hi Eric,
What a neat post! Was that L.I. Train behind you? =) just wondering.
My office space:
I have a meditation stone on my desk that says, “clarity” Also a check just like you. I have 2 different vision boards on the left side of my wall. Contributions I want to make, goals I look forward to do this year, Character I want to be (being a better mom, leader, visionary, etc) I also have a separate vision board for my husbands and our goals for our son before he turns 5yrs old. Also I have images of things that makes me happy. Laughter is a BIG PART in my life. So my Office Space is feng shui & light.
I love how you set an Intention each and everyday and read T.Harv Ecker cards. And your declaration of your love for your sis is INCREDIBLE! It shows on all the work you do from your blog, tribe, your wall posts on FB/twitter, to your relationship with your baby sister how MUCH you really do appreciate everyone around you and loves life so much.

Thanks for the great share Eric :)

Hi Eric, I can ABSOLUTELY say with definitive conviction that I have the most OPTIMAL workspace!

When I first moved, my FIRST priority was to build an office that was totally efficient and conducive to working loooong hours at my desk..

I designed and built an office that is within swivel distance to everything– my printer, files, books/shelves, pictues and cabinets. I love it and it was the best investment I ever made!

When we have parties, Jon (my fiance) shows everyone his wine collection and I show everyone my office.

I love your post because I strongly feel that having an efficient, organized, and \"within SWIVEL distance is so critcial! Awesome post :)

How cool to come here and read this today. My goal for today is to have a completely organized work space. How much of our time gets wasted by not being able to find what we are looking for? How many great ideas get passed by because our disorganization creates a feeling of inadequacy? If you wake up in the morning and walk into a clean and comfortable workspace you are immediately ready to work. You have the feeling of being able to take on the world!

Another great blog Eric!

You are spot on Eric!

I spent several years in a setting that was cold, no windows and unfriendly. Why? I didn’t know what I wanted nor did I have any goals. It’s hard to get anywhere in life when you have nothing to look forward to.

Changing my workspace meant changing my life and I Founded a company called Connecting, which has gone global. My workspace now includes plenty of windows, several desks for help, and wonderful smells. :) I love it!

Truly it can change your perspective as you suggest.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for this post. I’m the type of the person that absolutely loves having good surroundings. I’m always looking for new ways to decorate my places and stuff.
A couple things I have on my desk (out of the million cluttered things – which ARE organized though) … are …
1. a picture of Jesus
2. some family pictures (a special one of my mom because she has always been there for me) along with a picture of the Founder or my favorite charity, St. Jude’s Children Hospital. it puts me in touch with great thinkers and people “in black and white” of times past. Below that it says “Sometimes God answers our prayers one day at a time.” I also have some memorabilia from one of the first music artists I ever represented … helps me to remember “where” I started out.)
3. I have a lot of things that mean a lot to me. Its important just like you say.

I noticed it looked like you had a train going by in the background, out your window. LOL, I thought that was pretty cool.

Blessings,

Hey Eric: We work so much with our minds and connecting with people. Therefore your points about our workspace is cool. Our energy that flows affects our thoughts and actions, so create for you self such a place. Plants and water and fish puts me in a calm place where my mind can flow. The disorganization and chaos of my space reflects my state of mind in what I’m doing and learning right now. Thanks
