Experience Your Good Now

by Eric Goldstein on May 28, 2010

Experience Your Good Now It’s that time again… another book review for Hay House Publications.  It’s funny the way things work… I wanted to read more, and now Hay House sends me new books that they’re getting ready to release to read and do a blog post review for them.  Pretty cool!

The book that I’m reviewing today is Louise Hay’s new book Experience Your Good Now!: Learning To Use Affirmations.

I really enJOYed reading this book.  I’ve been becoming aware of the way that I talk to myself more and more lately, and this book was right in alignment with this topic.

We are all speaking to ourselves on a daily basis, more than we actually know we are.  You may be reading this right now and saying “I don’t talk to myself’”… it’s that voice right there that I’m referring to.  You’re not crazy for talking to yourself… you’re human.

We are constantly thinking… which basically is talking to ourselves.  The challenge with this is that most of us have been programmed to think more towards the negative end of the spectrum.  It’s okay if you do… you had a lot of years of listening to your parents, teachers, grandparents, etc.  Most of the stuff that came out of their mouths probably wasn’t words of empowerment.

Do any of these sound familiar?

“Money doesn’t grow on trees” , “Don’t get your hopes up”, “You have to save for a rainy day”, “We can’t afford it”, “You really should watch what you’re eating”

These are just a few of the things that you may have heard.  Your parents and the others that told you these things didn’t know any better.  I believe that people always do the best they can with the resources they have.

They were programmed as well to think and talk this way, so they were just doing what they knew.  Being subjected to this year after year, caused some of these statements to become your daily habitual thoughts.

Most of them you’re thinking and not even realizing that you are.  They’ve become so ‘normal’ that you’ve almost become numb to them… you’ve acclimated to them.

The boiling frog story…

frog eyesIf a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.  It’s sort of what’s happened to a lot of people over time.

The negative statements were made gradually over time, so they just got use to them… not realizing they were being COOKED!

Now can you see how this can changed your pattern of thinking over time?  The disempowering statements turned into your thoughts, and then the habitual thinking of those thoughts created your beliefs

A belief is just a thought you keep thinking… and when you think it long enough, it becomes one of your truths… better known as a ‘belief’.

Not to worry, I have good news!

Just like your parents, teachers and all of the others programmed you… you are able to re-program yourself back to thinking more on the positive side of the scale.  How do you do this?  With positive self talk… otherwise known as Affirmations.

In Louise Hay’s new book Experience Your Good Now!: Learning To Use Affirmations, she takes you by the hand and gives you a step-by-step program to creating powerful affirmations for yourself.

Louise’s style of writing is engaging and entertaining.  It’s one of those books that you’ll pick up to start reading, and next thing you know 2 hours has passed.  Louise shares it all in this book.  She gives simple processes to re-program your thinkin’ so it’s not stinkin’ anymore :)

One of the many POWERFUL things that I took away from this book is doing affirmations in front of a mirror.  There’s something that happens when you’re looking yourself square in the eyes and speaking your words out loud.  There’s this connection that happens… very hard to put into words… but if you’ve done them this way for a while, you know what I’m talking about.

Are you currently doing affirmations?

I created a blog post a few weeks back on this topic and I challenged people to step up and do affirmations for 30 days straight.  If you’ve read that post and took on the challenge please share your progress so far by leaving a comment below.

If you haven’t… are you willing to take that challenge now?  30 days straight of powerful affirmations… I promise you that you will see a MAJOR difference in the unfolding of your life if you follow through on this.  Post a comment below and let me now if your up for the challenge…

Also, pass this post on to your buddies over on Twitter and Facebook.  This is VALUEABLE information that can truly make a difference in their lives.  I appreciate you taking the time to read today… thank you!

Yours In Empowerment,

Eric Goldstein

I love this book! I also love her book called You Can Heal Your Life. How did you get the opportunity to review books for Hay House? Also are you aware of The Aware Show? Some of your readers might enjoy this teleseminar series where Lisa Garr in conjunction with Hay House interviews many of the great spiritual leaders and energy healers of our time.

Hello Eric,

This is a beautiful post, thank you!

I love your simple clear explanation of what a ‘belief’ is (I like how the word ‘lie’ is within that word!)

And the frog analogy is perfect!

I have played with the affirmations in the mirror technique and I really enjoy it, makes me laugh and it’s very effective for Powering your Self up!

I am also happy to report that I have now completed my SECOND VIDEO!… YES!! And Eric you will be Proud of me with this one… I have excelled myself… please feel free to go and check it out and give me marks out of 10.

Hey Janice,

I never notices that the word ‘lie’ is
in the word belief… you’re awesome!

It’s so true… a belief is just a thought
that we keep thinking… change your
thoughts… change your beliefs.

Just check out your blog post with
your video… good stuff!

I am very familiar with affirmations and I bet that Oprah Winfry is also. But it is nothing like learning how to be in the present. Thinking happens on too shallow a level to make a big difference. Now Eckhart Tolle did not come up with being the present.

There was a book called BE HERE NOW in the 70s. Actually since it happened to Tolle by accident he was not too familiar with things that you can do to help be in the present like meditation, tai chi, yoga and other things.

Psychology tries to do this also. By removing the trauma from past events, attention units that are stuck in the past can return to the present. That is how Dianetics and Scientology explains it so Tom Cruise and John Travolta agree with this.

A very famous American psychologist, Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), said “I can feel guilty about the past, apprehensive about the future, but only in the present can I act. The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.”

Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet, says “There is a cup of joy inside of you, but you cannot drink from it save [unless] you forget the past and renounce the future.”

Eckhart Tolle says (page 59 of A New Earth) “Most people are so identified with the voice in the head– the incessant stream of involuntary and compulsive thinking and the emotions that are accompany it– that we may describe them as being possessed by their own mind.” Affirmations are just more of that.

The psychiatrist and author, Daniel Amen, M.D., has done over 40,000 brain scans. He says that meditation makes your brain work much better. He wrote the New York Times bestseller, Change your Brain, Change your Life. This book says that you should meditate everyday.

Also in The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle says (page 50):

Most people find it difficult to believe that a state of consciousness totally free of all negativity is possible. And yet this is the liberated state to which all spiritual teachings point. It is the promise of salvation, not in an illusory future but right here and now. You may find it hard to recognize that time [perception] is the cause of your suffering or your problems…. Ultimately, there is only one problem: the time-bound mind itself.

Wikipedia says, under Yoga Philosophy, “In all branches of yoga, the ultimate goal is the attainment of an eternal state of perfect consciousness.”

Hey Chuck,

First I want to THANK YOU for an
excellent comment. I really enjoyed
reading it… thanks for sharing!

The POWER is really in the present,
and I know first hand that meditation
helps practice hangin’ there for longer
periods of time.

I like what Abraham Hicks says about
meditation and why they teach it… “It’s
easier to teach someone ‘no thought’ then
it is to teach them pure positive thought…
and they both carry the same vibration’.

Thanks again for adding value here
in the community Chuck!

Eric,

Thanks for sharing the Abraham quote. I have studied many philosophies and spent much time in the spiritual community here on Maui, including hanging with Ram Dass himself.

At the end of the day I still gravitate towards Napoleon Hill’s philosophies and The Teachings of Abraham.

Nothing wrong with making the mind your ally through the use of positive affirmations.

We came here to be human, play, and create.

To each his own.

Hey Jay,

My pleasure on sharing that quote. Great to
hear that the Teachings of Abraham are some
of what you resonate the most with… me too!

They are my favorite… I was just listening to
Wayne Dyer’s “Inspiration” where he told the
story of Ram Dass. So cool that you get to hang
with him there in Maui!

We def came here to play and create… life
is supposed to be fun. Thanks for sharing
your perspective here bro:)

Thank you for this review! I have long enjoyed reading Louise Hay’s book You Can Heal Your Life and her daily affirmations on her web site.

It really is amazing how our self talk can affect our thinking, our beliefs, our actions, our relationships, our success – basically every aspect of our lives!

Self talk is so important yet it can be so easy to not pay attention to it or how it affects us. I have posted about that several times on my blog because I believe very much in the power of self talk.

The way that we talk to ourselves can determine our future!

Thanks again for the review. I will be on the lookout for that book!

Self talk changes out thought patterns… which
in turn changes what we believe to be ‘true’… and
what we believe to be ‘true’… is:)

Great post Eric! I have been a student of Louise Hay and her books for some time now! My favorite book is “You Can Heal Your Life.” That book has carried me through some tough times…and it high lights on “the mirror work” that you’re speaking of ………which is great!

I will get a copy of “Experience Your Good Now” and apply it to my daily personal development activities. Another great book by hay house that you might not be aware of……is a book called “The Laws Of Thinking”-by Bishop E. Bernard Jordan. After reading this book….you want be the same!

I will be sharing this post with my friends…and look forward to your next post.

Thanks,

Hey Eric! Great book it sounds like!

I love the story of the frog… so much truth to that! And I love that people are talking about overcoming those beliefs that have been programmed in us since childhood. There really is no reason for them to hold us back… at all.

Those who realize that certain things we learned in childhood can actually hold us back in adulthood and conquer those beliefs will be experiencing the dream lifestyle while others who don’t will continue to wallow in their own doubts and limitations.

Appreciate this valuable information you’ve shared! :)

I can see I’m going to have to purchase Louise Hay’s book, thanks so much Eric! Like many (so I see) we’ve had “You Can Heal Your Life” on our bookshelf for most of my life – its affectionately called The Blue Book in our house!
I actually have done (and continue to do) your Affirmation 30 day challenge, I can’t believe how much of a difference it’s made to my attitude. Affirmations in the mirror are really powerful.
Really enjoyed your book review Eric. Cheers Anna

Thanks Eric for sharing this great book.
I remember her first and it really turned my life around. I still say affirmations and Post them up to remind myself. When I have a client that is not used to saying affirmations, I tell them to write it on their bathroom mirror in red lipstick. (Hey, that’s the first place we go when we wake up … tee hee)
I tell them to leave it there for 30 days and then they can clean it.
That technique works well for them.
Every time I hit a block in my life, I identify it and write an affirmation for it. Sometimes I dangle it by my computer so I don’t forget.
The best way I found to say affirmations is incorporate it with a daily task. I usually tell people to say it in the shower. It is a private place, where they can say it loud and it is something you do every day.
Affirmations have healed me in numerous ways and it is something that never ends.
Thanks for bringing this book to our attention,
Donna Merrill

Eric,

Glad I stopped by today.

You bring up some great points…. especially the one
of begin programmed by those who surrounded us
while we were growing up.

I love my parents dearly, however their mindset is
exactly as you mentioned above. Negative and they
don’t even realize it.

As a result of jumping into the Marketing arena,
I have changed my mindset and easily catch myself
when I am being negative.

I really notice my parents, bless their hearts and I
simply try to put a positive slant on things when
spending time with them.

Thanks for sharing Eric.
