Today’s post is a piggy back off of yesterdays video. In the video I spoke about the importance of defining your personal brand. I had mentioned that you need to know who your audience is and what you are delivering to them.
I see a lot of Social Media marketers not very clear on this, so I wanted to give you a few steps to help…
Step 1: What Challenge Or Problem Are You Solving?
Your brand should deliver some kind of solution. A solution is the answer to a problem or a challenge. You need to figure out what is the problem that you are solving. If you create the solution then you have a desirable brand. Building a successful personal brand is about adding value to someones life. Solving a problem they are having is the ultimate way to do this.
Step 2: Who Is Your Target Audience?
Now that you know the problem that you’re solving, you need to take a good hard look at the group of people who you are solving this problem for. The more you can get to know who they are, the better you will get at giving solutions. You can start by asking yourself a few of these questions:
- Who is my target audience?
- Is my target audience male or female… or both?
- What is the age range of my audience?
- What do they do for a living?
- Is there a specific lifestyle that they live?
- What interests do they have?
These are just a few questions that you can ask yourself to get some clarity on who you are marketing to. Remember, the more you know them… the more stuff of value you can offer them.
Step 3: What Is The Mission Of Your Personal Brand?
What are you looking to do on a large scale? What is the outcome you are looking for? Who are you looking to help? These are some questions that will help you discover your mission. This mission should DRIVE you… it should be juicy!
Step 4: What Values Does Your Brand Hold At It’s Core?
This is where you define what you stand for. What is important to you and what you will be delivering? Your core values are at the foundation of your brand. These values will determine how you interact with your audience and how you go about giving them what they are looking for. They will govern how you make decisions and in what direction to steer your brand.
Step 5: How Do You Want Your Audience To See You?
Take yourself out of your shoes for a minute and place yourself in the shoes of your target audience. How do they see you? What do they look to you for? What value do you add to their life? How do they feel when they interact with you? Asking some of these questions will help you paint the picture of who you are to your audience.
Spend some time writing this stuff down. If you do, you’ll start to narrow down your niche and your personal brand way more then you ever have. There is a GREAT feeling when you know exactly who you’re marketing to and what you are marketing to them.
I’ve spent a lot of time asking myself questions like these. Pull out a piece of paper and get crackin’… what are you waiting for? The time is NOW to get this piece of your brand taken care of. Will you do it? Leave me a comment below and share your thoughts about this post… and if you’re going to write this stuff down.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my blog today. Share this post with your Facebook and Twitter peeps, I’m sure they will find value in it

Hey Eric, I love the specifics you give here. Very helpful. Question for you: My latest post is not being listed properly when I comment on someone’s blog. It is an older post. What could be the problem? Thanks, Eric. Blessings, Amy

Try uninstalling ‘commentluv’ and reinstalling it,
that might work for you… let me know
This is so important and something I am continuously working on as I get my site up and running. I have a tendency to want to be “all things to all people” and I realize I need to keep whittling away, focus, and determine my niche and my market.
Thanks for the encouragement!

The more focused your brand can
be, the more you can actually help
people.
Business is all about solving people’s
problems… giving them the solution.
It’s hard to be all things to all peeps;)
Great Stuff Eric. I remember when we walked through this together when you were my coach last year. These were defining moments for developing my blog and establishing my brand on-line. These five steps have made a huge difference for me personally. Thanks for all you do!
Krista
Hey Krista,
You’re blog and brand has been
coming along awesome… I had a
blast working with you last year.
You were one of those students that
brought their ‘A’ game to each session!
This is a great post Eric.
What you outlined above is what many people miss when they get into business. Not just MLM or Network marketing, but business in general, and it will collapse the business if they don’t go through the steps above.
Thanks for the excellent outline. I think many people will find it extremely helpful!
Right on Michael… most people miss
this and get right into designing their
blog and social sites.
This should be done first… then all
of the construction on your social
presence.
My pleasure on the outline!
Hey Eric,
Great addition to yesterdays post and you honestly make it so darn easy for people to figure out how they can monetize their brand and to find something that they are truly passionate about.
Thanks for creating this and I cannot wait to see what else you have in store

Thanks for the awesome tips, Eric. Can;t wait to go watch yesterday’s video now. Not totally having my brand figured out I just started my blog out and started going with it. What is crazy is how my brand has sense then started to take form in my mind and clarity has started to come about who my target audience will be. I can’t wait to take your advice this weekend and write some of these things down. I finally feel Clarity is starting to come in all of this

I love your work and promotion on ‘personal branding’ and this post is particularly good because you have broken it down in to simple steps that anyone can follow!

Hey Eric, I have really been at cross roads lately with my blog and brand, this is definitely going to help me gain some clarity on where I am now and where I want to be heading with my site!
cheers
Crossroads are good, as long as
you choose a path. Most people
sit at a crossroad and don’t choose.
You’re doing great!
Hey Eric,
I always love to come by and see what’s on your mind. Getting clear on your brand I agree is a huge snag. Thanks for helping others with this process.

Hello Eric,
Branding is such a key piece to online marketing success. In fact as you know it is our foundation. I have been fine tuning my brand and how I want to represent myself online. Ever getting clearer on how best to meet the needs of my audience and of course zeroing in on my best target audience.
I have written some of this down but I am going back and fine tuning this process even further.
Thanks for a fabulous post. Look forward to watching your video as well.

Hey Eric
Great post. These 5 steps that you wrote out are big steps to achieving the kind of brand that really makes an impact to people. And the brand is so important to the success of your business. If you build a crappy brand or no brand, you will never achieve the business success that you truly can.
Thanks for sharing this
