Are there certain blogs that you read often? Have you ever wondered why? Usually they’re doing a few things that make you want to come back often. When it comes to building a personal brand, the more you can get your readers coming back… the better.
I’m going to share with you 5 quick tips to a better blog, that can help you have more and more people coming back or another serving. To me life has always been about the little things… I feel if we do enough little things with excellence in mind, then the excellent BIG things show up.
“If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop that habit in little matters” – Colin Powell
Let’s get this show on the road… here are the 5 Quick Tips To A Better Blog:
1. A Professional Layout – The look and feel of your blog is going to make or break a return visitor. Now you don’t need to go crazy and spend a lot of money with this, but you want something that is neat and clean… easy on the eyes.
As a blogger I visit a lot of blogs. I can tell you that there are MANY that I don’t return to. The layouts are so hard on the eyes, that I don’t even take the time to read the article that I came there to read.
Most of the time it’s the blog theme or the custom design that they purchased that gives it a ‘sloppy’ layout. For someone using a self-hosted WordPress blog (and I recommend this), I’d check out the Thesis Theme for WordPress. This theme flat out rocks! It’s very customizable, and most of it you can do all on your own. I’d recommend hiring a designer to do the header design for you. It’s the theme I’m rockin’ myself here on CreateWithEric.com.
2. Content Layout – This is a biggie and will make all the difference. You can have great content, but if it’s not laid out a certain way… people won’t read it. First, forget most of everything that you learned back in school when it came to writing.
Remember when your teacher told you not to start a new paragraph until you started talking about a new topic… throw that in the garbage! It’s much easier on the eyes when you write in short paragraphs.
Three to four lines, and then jump to the next paragraph. It doesn’t matter if you’re not talking about a new topic… are you looking to have your readers come back again or are you looking to impress your 3rd grade teacher? Look at this post that you are reading, it’s laid out just like I’m talking about here. I wouldn’t have you do anything that I’m not doing myself
3. Video Blogging – Now this scares a lot of people, but it’s by far the #1 way for readers to connect with you. If they jive with you, they’ll be back for more. I’m a big fan of using all different mediums on my blog (video, text, audio), but the one that I feel I get the best results from are video.
I know that I get to connect with my readers on a deeper level this way. They get to see more of who I am, and really get the message that I’m looking to share with them. I have to tell you… getting on video was one of the best personal development exercises I’ve ever done! It’s going to feel weird in the beginning… and your videos might suck at first, my videos did:)
The more you keep doing them, the more comfortable you will get… and the more of your true self you will allow to come through. When you do that… welcome to Hollywood my friend! You’re readers will enjoy watching your videos and coming back for more.
4. Clear ‘Call To Actions’– Most people don’t do things unless you tell them to do it. I get this question all the time… “Eric, how do I get people to comment on my blog posts?” I always give the same simple answer ‘Ask them to do it’. Where ever you want something done on your blog, give a clear ‘call to action’. Tell them exactly what you want them to do.
If you notice at the end of every one of my blog posts, I ask you to comment. I usually will pose a question that has to do with what the blog post was about. It’s a funny thing… ask and you shall receive!
5. Well Written ‘About Me’ Page – This is one of the most IMPORTANT pages on your blog, and on most blogs this is the page they give the least amount of effort on. They share one or two paragraphs about themselves. This is one of the most trafficked pages for new readers on your blog.
When a new reader comes to your blog and likes the post that brought them there, most of the time they will click on your ‘About Me’ page. They’re basically saying to themselves ‘I think this person has great content. Let me see more about them to determine if I’m going to come back again’.
Tell your story on this page, tell you reader what they can expect from coming to your blog. Share your ups… and share your downs. People want to get to know the REAL you. Have a peek at my About Eric Goldstein page.
*** A little tip on this page… name the page ‘About YourFullName’, and not ‘About Me’ or ‘About’. You want this page to help your search engine rankings for when someone searches your name. Unless your name is ‘Me’, use your full name:)
Well I hope you found value in these few simple tips. Remember, it’s doing a lot of little things really great that add up to great big things. So did you find something within this post that you can add to your blog? If so, what was it? Share with us here in the community by leaving a comment below.
Also, pass this post along to your Facebook & Twitter peeps. Thanks for reading today!

Great post Eric, Thanks!
I love your video blogs, they definitely are the way to go… and watching yours helped me get the guts together to do one for my ‘About me’ page!
However I haven’t launched my blog yet as still crafting it!
As soon as I do though… you will have the FIRST invite (and hopefully make the first comment)
Thanks Eric, Happy an AWESOME day!

Thanks Janice…
I’ve grown to really love doing video
posts:)
Shoot that video girl… you’ll love it!
P.S. Have an AWESOME day even!!
The tip I found most helpful was your sharing the theme you use for your blog, and the discussion about making sure it\’s easy on the eyes. I have been stuck on that for awhile. I had someone else design my blog header but it\’s pretty bad–so I am still trying to get it right. This post gave me the confidence to stick up for myself and make sure I get the designer to help me get the look and feel right. If you have time to take a look at it I would love some feedback to pass along to him.
Also, I have a video I made that specifically addresses the fear of making videos and introduces a simple technique for clearing your stress or anxiety around video making, If any of your followers are interested they can check out the video at radicalchangeMLM on you tube. It\’s the video entitled EFT. Check it out and let me know what you think– if it is helpful.
The theme is important Rebecca, as
people decide very quickly if they are
staying or going when they land on
your blog.
I like your blog header… i would have
the designer have the header go all the
way from ‘left to right’… taking up the entire
width of the screen.
It’s just a minor adjustment but will make
a BIG difference visually:)
Thanks for the tips Eric,
I just started video today… and your tip on our “about” page… I’m going to redo my page to make it a little more personal. Thanks Eric this starts my day off in the right direction.
Question? The small welcome video that’s in the side bar on most peoples blog… what do you use, plugin or widget? YouTube videos are too large.
Coach Freddie
.-= Coach Freddie´s last blog ..A Little About Coach Freddie =-.
Hey Coach Freddie,
My pleasure on the shares!
To get a video in the sidebar like people
have in their ‘optin boxes’, they most likely
had a designer/programmer do it.
I don’t know of a plugin that allows you
to do that, but if you find one.. post it here
for others to know about… thanks!
HI Eric,
My site is undergoing some changes including the header, and hopefully the theme itself. I’m rewriting my “About Me” page this morning, thanks to your suggestion…as well as making some other changes.
Adding a video to the sidebar is pretty easy – just embed the video in a widget. Knowing almost nothing about html, I was still able to go into the embed code and play around with the size dimensions until I got it to a usable size.
Good luck Freddie! Using a programmer is often important but not always necessary for everything. If you’re at all like me, you’ll find that it’s nice knowing how to do a few things yourself.
Thanks again Eric,

Come back and share your ‘About Me’

Great post Eric,
I’m still working on my ‘about Me’ page. I thought I was putting too much thought into it, wanting to create a video and all that – but then I saw yours and it looks great.
So thanks for the info.. it’s really gonna push me to get that done .. ASAP

Eric, I love this post. I have been meaning to redesign my blog in the last few weeks and never got around to it. I can see that the about page is very important. Also the theme will make a great difference. I have been using Atahualpa as my theme and I have loved its flexibility. I wonder if I it is as streamlined for SEO as Thesis.
Thanks for the info Eric and now that I see Hector likes this too, I will definitely pay attention to redesigning the whole blog.

Thanks buddy!
Hey Hector,
The page is better off being lengthy
in content… as your peeps want to
get to really know you.
Video takes it to the next level, so I
always advise a creating one after the
copy for the page is done.
Good stuff bro!
Hi Eric!
Great tips here, thanks! I am still wondering whether I like the look and feel of my blog theme but its’ coming along. I also need some work on my about ‘me’ section so you’ve now inspired me to work on that a little more, video on the way!

Hey Eric,
It’s my first visit on your blog. I found you via Katie Freiling’s as I am a regular reader of hers.
Just wanted to say thank you for this great post. I’m quite new to blogging too and in particular, I found your tip about making the about me page engaging and personal so useful. Knowing about the real person behind a website makes all the difference.
I think another thing that is important for a better blog is the hosting. What I mean is making sure you get a reliable host. I’ve come across some sites that are so slow (maybe they have too any plugins), that you don’t bother to stay and read.
p.s love your writing style. It flows well but has a good mix of authority yet personal. I’ll definitely be adding your feed.
Thanks again

Hi Eric,
thanks for this useful info – your point about the “About” page is so important, using your full name for search engine “friendliness”.
Another useful tip about this:
if you don’t want to have the full page title “About Tracey Rissik” or whatever showing in your navigation bar, but you DO want it as the page title and (more importantly!!) the title tag, try the “All In One SEO” plugin; apart from making adding keywords and title tags to your pages too, it has a really funky “Menu Label” option which allows you to decide what will show in your navigation bar … WITHOUT affecting your SEO!
Hope that’s useful to everyone…

Wow Eric, talk about value, thanks so much for this awesome post. The first tip that you talk about is one that’s played on my mind, I love my theme because it’s crisp, sharp and elegant (even if I say so myself lol), the only trouble is I don’t have a clue ‘if’ or ‘how’ I can edit my header because right now it’s a little bland to say the least. About your blog… at first glance
I’d change the color of the theme.
The black/grey with white text is
hard on the eyes… looks really
cool, but harder to read…
And you want your peeps to hang
around and read. Wonder why Google
has a white background… much easier
to read.
I’d say at least the part where the
text is… the rest could stay the color
it is…
Also, in the WWSGD plugin that you
have installed telling people to catch
you on Facebook… hyperlink ‘Facebook’
to your Facebook page.
I like to use the WWSGD plugin to
have people subscribe to my list, just
my preference.
Hope some of this helps, again all
that I stated is just from my perspective…
