5 Basic Personal Branding Skills

by Eric Goldstein

Hey Hey Hey… In yesterday’s post I highlighted the 5 Basic Skills To Creating A POWERFUL Personal Brand.  If you haven’t read it yet, swing by there and give it a peek and today’s post will make much more sense.

Let’s dig right in and start breaking these steps down in more detail…

Step 1:  ”Design Your Cash Flow Map”

I’ve already created a few great trainings on this topic.  Think of your ‘Cash Flow Map’ as your ‘back-end’… or your funnel as a lot of people like to call it.

  • Have You Created Your ‘Cash Flow Map’ Yet:  In this video I talk about the importance of having a ‘back-end’ set up for your business.  The back-end is where the money is made from your Personal Brand.  Watch this video to hear my thoughts on this
  • How To Design Your ‘Cash Flow Map’:  Here I created a quick PowerPoint presentation where I walk you through, in detail, setting up your ‘back-end’.  I share with you a common mistake that most marketers are making that could stop you from creating a solid brand.

Step 2:  Build Your Social Media Following

As we spoke about yesterday, you want to make sure that you are hangin’ out on the big boys.  Basically Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  Now there are other niche social media sites that are excellent places to connect with people within your industry, but if you use the big boys consistently, you can create a laser targeted following.

Let me share with you a little bit of how I use all three of these sites…

  • Twitter – This is such a POWERFUL marketing tool, and most people using it don’t even understand it’s true power.  You are able to target people who are tweeting/talking about a certain keyword or keyword phrase.  This is why I really LOVE Twitter.
    • Twitter Search – This is basically Twitter’s search engine of all the tweets that happen on Twitter.  This is where the real VALUE of twitter is.  You can type in a keyword or keyword phrase within you niche, and you will find people tweeting that keyword.  This is a great opportunity to jump into conversations that have to do with your industry.
    • Add Followers On Twitter – I like to use a software to automate things.  I’m not spamming tweets or anything, I’m just using it to target people within my niche and add them as followers.  The software that I’ve been using for a while now is Twitter FriendAdder.  There are not many automated following tools that still work today, but this one does as they are keeping up with Twitter’s rules and regulations.
  • Facebook – One of my favorite places to hang out on the web.  Facebook now has over 500 million active user accounts and 50% of their active users log on to Facebook in any given day.  That’s a whole lotta people!
  • YouTube – They have claimed the title ‘The 2nd Largest Search Engine’… that’s pretty awesome when they were designed as a search engine.  More and more people are searching directly on YouTube for what they want, instead of going to Google… and the beautiful part about it is the competition is so much LESS!

Step 3: Create Content

As we spoke about in yesterday’s post, you have a few different options to choose from when it comes to creating content on your blog. You have to find which one works for you.  I tend to like video, as I can get a lot more out in less time… and I feel I can build more rapport with my readers through my videos.  Let’s talk about each one.

  • Video – Don’t go thinking that you need to get a ton of expensive filming equipment to get started with video marketing.  I’ve been using the same camera since I started with video, the Flip Camcorder 5 Basic Personal Branding Skills.  It’s picture quality is awesome and it’s all you need.
  • Audio – Audio is another great source of content.  The great thing about audio is you can upload them to podcasting sites like PodcastAlley.  Your readers can put the audio files onto their iPods and listen to them while at the gym, on the train, etc.
  • Text – This is the most common of all the types of blog posts.  The biggest benefit that I see from text posts is it adds fresh new content to your blog… which Google loves!  There are a lot of video bloggers that just upload the video as a blog post, but I like to add some text as well to help with my Google rankings.

Step 4: Drive Traffic

This is where the rubber meets the road.  Without traffic, you have nothing.  If a store has nobody coming in, they are out of business… same goes for your blog if it’s a ghost town.  You can drive a great amount of traffic just from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

  • Syndicate Your Content – Each time you publish a new blog post, head over to your Facebook page and put it in your status with a link to the post.  Do the same on Twitter… send out a tweet with a quick 140 character blurb and a link to your new post.  If you’re consistently connecting with the people on your social media sites, you’ll build the trust factor with them… causing them to click on your links.
  • Tribe Syndication - If you want to step things up a bit and drive some quality targeted traffic, then Tribe Syndication is for you .  This one strategy has had a great impact on my business and my brand.  You’re basically connecting with others within your niche and joining forces… creating a blogging alliance where you each drive targeted traffic to each other.

This is quality traffic, as it’s others referring you… the credibility factor weights in very heavy here!

Step 5: Build Relationships

Now that you’ve done all of this work, you have to build and maintain your relationships.  Most marketers miss the boat BIG time on this one!  It’s called ‘social’ media for a reason…

  • Reply to Blog Comments – When people comment on your blog posts, reply back… what a concept:)  You started the conversation, they answered/replied… and now it’s your turn to respond.  I get a decent amount of comments on my blog posts and I still manage to reply to 99% of them.  There may come a time when it gets too hectic, but I believe this is where the real relationship building happens.
  • Reply To Facebook Comments – Same thing goes here.  If you post something on your Facebook wall, and people comment, comment back.  If I have time I reply to each and every person on the thread by typing the ‘@’ and then there name so they know that I’m talking to them.
  • Reply To Twitter Direct Messages – If someone mentions your name out on Twitter, then reply back.  If they retweeted a piece of your content, reply back and thank them.

This might seem like basic communication skills, but you would be blown away by the amount of people that just aren’t doing these things.  The brand that CARE the most in the end, WIN!

I hope you enjoyed todays post.  I’d love to hear your thoughts on the information that I shared with you.  What are you currently already doing?  What things can you add to what you are doing?  The community here gets so much value when you comment, so post a comment now.

Also, share this post with your Facebook and Twitter friends.  If they are out there using social media to build a personal brand, this post will help them a ton.  Thank you in advance!

I’ll catch you soon…

Yours In Success,

Eric Goldstein

Hey Eric fabulous post in every way. I loved how easy it was to follow, very concise. This one goes in my “Best of” batch for future reference and AND to pass along to others I meet along the way who are as overwhelmed as I was – before working with you! Hi Eric,

You listed Twitter FriendAdder, but that appears to be a Firefox plugin that is discontinued. Your link goes to a shopping cart for a product called Tweet Friend Adder, which is $50. Did you pay for it? I will buy it if this is the correct one and you can vouch for it. Lemme know!

Hey Miri,

Thanks for the comment, and welcome
to the community here!

The tool I’m using is the one that the
link goes to. Yes, it is $50… but it’s been
a great investment in my business.

I’ve been using it for almost a year now,
and I’ve been able to target people within
my niche.

I love your blog! Congrats on your cooking
TV show. Have you thought of creating a
cooking ‘show’ on your blog?

Have a great day Miri!

Hi Eric. Thanks the quick reply , I am buying the software! I do have a series of videos on my blog, that’s what led to my show. I managed to get my videos in front of the right people at Food Network, and then I connected with a fantastic producer. I’m a pretty good networker in the traditional sense. But this online social networking thing is a whole different animal, so I really appreciate your site and all the resources you have to offer. I want to build up my fan base before we launch on TV, so I have a lot of work to do! Any other tips or tools you can share?

Great stuff Miri! I wish you lots
of success with your show.

Any other tips… I would just stay
consistent with adding content and
connecting with people within your
niche.

Connect with other people in your
niche who are sort of doing what
you are doing… and if you both have
Facebook Fan/Like Pages for your
businesses, then suggest each others
pages to each others fans/followers.

If you do this with a few people, you
will get some new fans… that will then
get your new content and become loyal
readers/followers.

Thanks for commenting Miri!

Hi Eric, great value here. Especially the last part – Build Relationships.

If more people would understand the importance of this step, things would go much more smoothly in their businesses. The fact is, you can do all the previous steps to perfection, but unless you build a relationship with people, it doesn’t matter.

Another thing that I would add to your sublist is that people need to become interested in others in order for others to be interested in them. Nothing is more important to a person than themselves. If you take interest in that, they will take interest in you. Get good at that and it can take your personal brand to another level!

I just found your blog from my friend Donna Merrill and I must say I’m enjoying reading all your posts. Thanks for being you!

Eric, this a great list! Thanks for the great tips!

I haven’t taken full advantage of twitter, I like your idea of simply thanking people who retweet your content. That is a great first step for me to interact on twitter. I mostly just tweet and retweet content.

I also really need to get a facebook page for my blog!

I have recently joined StumbleUpon and I really enjoy using it. It’s similar to twitter in that you share links that you like but it’s so much easier to share with their tool bar. One click and you’ve shared/stumbled it. Plus I love how it looks with images versus twitter which is all text.

up a lot of traffic with it.

Hey Eric

thanks for the re-cap, love re-cap posts when someone has done a mini-series like you have.

I have to say that one of the biggest things for me at the moment probably falls under Number 5 – its the comments part of blogging. I read a great post the other day about commenting on others blogs and it made me realise alot. I think that sometimes people can get caught up in the whole “commenting to drive traffic to your blog” that they have forgotten what the real purpose of commenting is all about.

To me it’s about giving your opinion and creating some form of conversation with the author and other commentators on the blog. Its funny I have had my eyes opened up wide now when accepting comments on my own site especially when you get the obligatory – thanks, great post – kinda comment, borders spamming really. And it has me certainly watching how I engage with others now also :-)

Loving this mini-series you are putting together here, great info even for people who have been around the traps for a while, great reminder that sometimes you need to make sure you are still covering your basics even if you are rocking it out :-)
cheers

Hey Nat,

Within number 5 I was mostly
talking about replying to the comments
on your own blog.

It’s important to connect and build
those relationships. I see a lot of bloggers
that never reply to their readers.

Commenting on other blogs within your
niche is a great way to connect with other
bloggers and find other readers for your
blog.

Just like you said… the comment must
add value to that community and not just
be a spammy comment to grab traffic.

Thanks for always sharing Nat!

Hi Eric,

I love this re-cap post! I’m now focusing a lot on building relationships and commenting on other bloggers’ posts. Building relationships with people and engaging in conversations with them is really key if you want to buil up your list of followers. And it is also something I really love: the “social” part of marketing is what I really like about this business!

When you are so involved in your business you tend sometime to disregard important basic and key elements of it. Your post really helped me to go throught what I’m doing and be sure that I’m not nelecting anything!

Cheers

Hey Paola,

The basics are really what will give
you that strong foundation and close

Sometimes people do get involved
in other stuff, and forget about the
basics.

Always remember, to keep the basics
moving along with whatever you are
doing.

Thanks!

Eric,

I must admit that you laid out this post very nicely. So much juice in this post, it’s amazing. There’s a couple of key points that i really resonated with.

One was the blog comments. I think the people we connect with get this, but there are still tons of wasted opportunities floating by. People need to realize the power of leaving a good comment.

First, you can connect with the owner of the blog post. Give him strokes for the work he/she did on the post. Second, leave your mark. just saying “Great post” is a short sided vision for building relationships. It can go so much farther when you take an extra minute to leave a good connecting, value added comment.

The other point I liked was building your social media following. to me this actually connects to your other point of tribe syndication. Sharing good content (that relates to your niche) to your followers is a real easy way to build followers and relationships at the same time.

We’ve ushered into social media a new paradigm. Giving first!

I like to call them ‘TNT’ – the nice things. Just taking that few minutes to respond to people and like you say Eric even just using @in your reply posts on FB makes a huge difference. I feel special when someone responds to me in that manner, thanks for sharing all this, I love it! Continued success to you, Trish

I would also add into your #4 to syndicate on LinkedIn – most people ignore their ability to “update a status” on LinkedIn, but it is another great way to share your content with an audience you might not reach with your Facebook or Twitter accounts. LinkedIn groups are also awesome places to connected and build relationships. With 85 million users, LinkedIn is one of the least tapped social media resources in my opinion (and no, I’m not a LinkedIn spokesperson!)

I am not that good a video yet so just wondering what few tips you could add.

I also have a short attention span and cant watch most videos longer than 5 minutes. I can read a post in 1/10 the time it would take to watch the long 20plus minute stuff…..but I realize there is a huge opportunity with video for others who like it more than reading.
